“Buy one, get one” sounds simple until the second item has restrictions or the first item’s price has changed. A BOGO offer can be useful for products you already buy, but the meaningful number is what you pay for the quantity you will use.
Calculate the price for both items
For a true buy-one-get-one-free promotion on two equal-priced $12 items, the pair costs $12 before tax: $6 per item. If the usual price elsewhere is $5 each, the promotion is still more expensive. For a buy-one-get-one-half-off offer, the same pair costs $18, or $9 each. Compare that amount with the regular sale price of the exact product.
Check whether the lower-priced item receives the discount when you mix sizes or styles. If the deal applies only to select products, make sure the two items you want qualify in the cart.
Ask whether you need two
A second item is not a saving when it spoils, expires, or sits unused. Pantry staples and household supplies can work well if you have storage space and a realistic plan to use them. A second seasonal item in an unwanted color may be a poor trade even at half price.
Start from your shopping list. If only one item is needed, compare its single-item price with the BOGO pair. The smaller total often wins for your household even when its per-item price is higher.
Read stacking and return rules
Some retailers exclude BOGO items from a separate coupon, loyalty reward, or free-shipping threshold. Others adjust the refund value if you return one item from the pair. Check the promotion terms before adding a code or assuming you can return the second item at full price.
Our coupon-code checklist shows how to confirm that an extra code changed the order. For competing promotions, compare free shipping and a discount code with the BOGO cart total.
Use the final cart as the test
- Price the pair and calculate the cost per usable item.
- Compare the exact products with an ordinary sale or another store.
- Check expiration, storage, exclusions, and returns.
- Choose the lowest total for the quantity you actually need.
Browse current coupons and deals for other ways to lower a planned purchase. The best offer is the one that reduces what you spend on items you will use.
