Free Shipping or a Discount Code: Which Saves More?

Plain delivery parcels on a sunny doorstep

A store may offer free shipping and a coupon code but allow only one promotion per order. The best choice depends on the cart size, shipping charge, and what qualifies. A quick comparison can settle it before you pay.

Start with the same cart

Use the items you intended to buy, in the quantities you intended to buy. Note the subtotal, shipping charge, and any handling fee. Apply the free-shipping offer and record the amount due. Then remove it, apply the discount code, and record the new total.

For example, a $60 cart with $8 shipping would cost $68 before tax. Free shipping makes it $60. A 10% item discount saves $6, leaving $62 if shipping still costs $8. In that example, free shipping wins by $2. The result changes if the discount is larger or shipping costs less.

Watch minimum-order rules

Free shipping may require a threshold. If the cart is short, do not add an unplanned item without counting its price. Spending $12 to avoid an $8 shipping fee raises the total by $4. The extra item is worthwhile only if you wanted it anyway.

Some thresholds use eligible merchandise before a coupon, while others use the discounted subtotal. Check the retailer’s current terms and the actual checkout summary rather than assuming either method.

Include delivery needs

A free-shipping offer may apply only to standard delivery. If you need the order sooner, compare the required shipping speed in both scenarios. Store pickup can be another option when it is convenient, but travel time and availability matter too.

For a broader cart comparison, see our guide to the final price before you buy. If a code appears to work but the total does not change, use the coupon-code checklist to check exclusions and thresholds.

Choose the lower amount due

  1. Keep the planned cart unchanged.
  2. Record the total with free shipping.
  3. Record the total with the discount code.
  4. Compare delivery speed and return terms.

Look through current coupons and deals for options, then use the retailer’s final checkout total to make the decision.
