Pet supplies are repeat purchases, which makes a subscription or bulk bundle sound like an easy saving. Sometimes it is. The useful question is what the same amount of food, litter, or care products costs over the period your household will actually use it.
Start with the unit price
Compare the price per pound, ounce, dose, or item rather than the package price. A larger bag can cost less per pound but more overall if it will go stale before your pet finishes it. For medication and supplements, follow the product’s storage and expiration directions; do not buy excess solely to hit a threshold.
Use the same brand, size, and formulation when comparing retailers. A different recipe or dosage is not an interchangeable bargain just because the package looks similar.
Separate the first shipment from later shipments
Many recurring-order promotions emphasize the first delivery. Check the price of the second and third deliveries, the delivery interval, minimum order, and whether the discount changes. Put a reminder before the next billing date if you try a subscription.
If your pet’s needs change, see how to pause or cancel before placing the first order. The best recurring price is still a poor fit if deliveries arrive faster than you use the product.
Check bundles item by item
A bundle can combine essentials with treats or accessories you would not otherwise buy. Add up the prices of only the items you need. If the bundle is still less expensive after that comparison, it may be worth considering. Factor in shipping and any restrictions on returning one part of the set.
Minimum-spend coupons can change the comparison. Our guide to the final checkout price shows why an extra item or delivery charge belongs in the calculation.
A repeat-purchase checklist
- Write down how long the package normally lasts.
- Compare the unit price of the exact product.
- Check later subscription deliveries, not only the first.
- Include shipping, storage, and expiration.
